Lord Mandelson is the man charged with finding ways to fund UK Car purchases (yes, he of the dodgy mortgage debacle – at least he should know a few tricks!) as the credit crunch has dried up funding, leading to an unprecedented drop in new car sales in the UK. Mandelson is due to make a statement in the Lords just after 3pm today, outlining the help the government is going to offer to ailing car makers. Central to this package is expected to be a funding channel directly from the Bank of England to inject liquidity in to the car financing sector.
The magnificent Audi R8 V10 was officially launched at Detroit this week (although we brought you details on the R8 V10 over a month ago!), and it will cause some real problems for car manufacturers at this level – most noticeably Porsche. The R8 V10 seems something of a bargain at £99,575 OTR (or £104,665 for the R-Tronic), particularly if you compare cars with similar performance, such as the F430, which is nearly £40k more.
British sports car specialist AC is back and teaming up with fabled Italian coachbuilder Zagato to create the new AC 378 GT Zagato, the first all-new AC for some time. The company has had an on-off relationship for much of the past decade, with production switched abroad, management changes and a confusing product line-up. But new management has been installed and are hoping to make a fist of AC Cars, one of the world's oldest car brands.
